March is National Nutrition Month

What you put in your body affects your skin as much (if not more) as what you put on the outside of your body. March is National Nutrition Month. There is not a better time to start eating healthier for your skin. By adding the following three foods to your diet, you can transform your skin.

Mangos- If your skin is dry and dehydrated, eat mangos. Mangos are a great source of Vitamin A. Vitamin A helps reduce wrinkles by increasing retention of water, collagen production and skins ability to withstand injury.

Cottage Cheese- Cottage cheese is a great source of Vitamin E and calcium. Vitamin E is a powerful anti-oxidant that boosts immunity and heals the skin. Studies also show that Vitamin E helps improve acne challenges and decrease the affects of photo aging. Calcium is important for cell renewal and improved lipid barrier function (keeps skin young and hydrated).

Mushrooms- Mushrooms have B Vitamins and selenium which help decrease the skins anti-inflammatory response and calm and decrease redness. Selenium (obtained from food sources) may help decrease sun damage and skin cancer. In addition, selenium is needed to maintain skins elasticity. (Note selenium obtained from supplements has been shown to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and other cancers). As a bonus, according to Self.com, mushrooms that have been exposed to UV light have large quantities of Vitamin D. Great news if you are a vegan being this is the only natural non-animal Vitamin D source.

Eating from the Rainbow

Rule #6 of The Amen Clinics 7 Rules for Brain Healthy Eating: Eat from the rainbow. Your body will love you for it! This means put natural foods in your diet of many different colors, such as blueberries, pomegranates, yellow squash, and red bell peppers. This will boost the antioxidant levels in your body and help keep your brain young. Of course, this does not mean Skittles or jelly beans.

Coffee

Yes I am addicted to coffee. Although coffee has gotten a bad rap in the past, studies have shown that coffee has great health benefits. According to an April 2010 article in Health.com, coffee drinkers may be at lower risk of liver, prostate, and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Coffee is the number 1 source of antioxidants in the American diet.

Pomegranates

Pomegranates are a delicious fruit that are low in calories (about 110 calories in a 4 inch diameter pomegranate), high in vitamin C and potassium, and a great source of fiber. Pomegranates contain three different types of polyphenols (tannins, anthocyanins, ellagic acid), powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants have been shown to help in the prevention of cancer and heart disease. FYI: an easy way to peel a pomegranate is to open it in a bowl of water and remove the fruit in the water. Strain and enjoy.

Raspberries

Raspberries are a healthy fruit choice to add to your diet. They can be eating raw or added to cold or hot dishes. One of my favorite chicken dishes includes raspberries. Raspberries are a great source of fiber (4.6 grams per ½ cup) and antioxidants (cancer killers). In fact when compared to other fruits, raspberries rank near the top of the list for antioxidant strength. 1 cup of raspberries contains half of the daily recommended dose of Vitamin C-powerful antioxidant. Vitamin C is needed to help with collagen (body protein) formation and proper function of the nervous system. Raspberries help protect skin from damaging effects of the sun and fade discolorations and age spots. Raspberries promote healing and scar reductions. If you do not like the taste of raspberries, don’t worry you can still incorporate raspberries into your body’s wellness. Add 2 cups crushed raspberries into one cup plain yogurt, apply to skin, leave on for 15 minutes then rinse with water.
